Just because a band is unsigned does not mean it still can’t come a long way. Take Miami’s own Magazine Society, comprised of Julio Berrones III (lead vocals), Joe Lamberson (rhythm guitar/vocals), Miguel Quintana (lead guitar), Danny Da Silva (drums), and Kevin Kelly (bass). For starters, this local rock band won $5,000 back in February at Magic City Casino for the Ultimate Miami Band Finals. Let’s also not forget the fact that they have performed at this year’s Rock n Roll Shootout in Coconut Creek for a chance to play a full set at the Sunfest Music Festival. Although Magazine Society did not proceed further on their Sunfest journey, it’s apparent that they’re definitely going places.
Berrones expresses enthusiasm about the group’s first EP. “We are just about finished…and we’re really excited. It’s definitely been a labor of love for three years and we are just hoping that all our patience and hard work pays off. If everything goes smoothly, we should be able to release it by the end of April/beginning of May. As for the name, we’re still working on that.” Berrones adds that once the EP is finished, the band can move on and start something new. Moving on means getting more exposure for their music by getting spots on the road, radio, TV, etc. “so that people will know and hopefully love Magazine Society and what we’re all about.”
Influenced by a wide array of bands from Mozart to Radiohead to Blink 182, Magazine Society is both inspired and pushed to create the best music possible. “We try to be as honest and transparent in our writing and we’ve found that writing about our experiences is one of the best ways to do that,” says Berrones. “We’re also really competitive individuals, so whenever we hear a great song or great album, it pushes us to want to make better music.” With an inspiring outlook like that, it’s more than guaranteed that Magazine Society’s future gigs will be bigger and better than their last.
