Today was definitely my favorite day interning at New Times. To find out where the strikers for Spirit Airlines were protesting, I called every number I had that was related to the strike. The only person that I was able to reach was someone by the name of Jennifer Lofquist, who informed me that the strike would occur from 5:00-7:00 pm on Griffin and US-1. After this phone call, I headed to my office and read articles regarding the strike made by the Spirit Airlines union, ALPA (Air Line Pilots Association). At 5:00, I arrived where the strikers were and interviewed a captain, a man who was a pilot and a strike committee chairman, a fourteen year old girl whose father and brother were pilots, and Michael E. Arth, a man running for Florida governor. By talking to my interviewees, I discovered that the airlines had come to an agreement with the negotiating committee, yet the pilots were still officially on strike. I also learned more about Arth, who is riding his bicycle from Key West to Pensicola to meet people personally to talk about his campaign. Overall, today was exciting and definitely reminded me of why I wanted to be a reporter – to interview those and get the scoop on breaking news.
